The 1951 Color Linocuts - #1-12 of 24

At the age of sixty, Dolice embarked upon a project to publish a series of color prints that would recreate the favorite scenes of New York that he had memorialized in etchings, pastels, oil paintings and other media throughout his life.

He decided on the linoleum block process to make the prints shown above. For each of the 24 scenes selected, he hand engraved seven individual plates -- one for each seven color inks that were used in making each print. He then printed each color, one upon the other for every single print made.

For the complete series, a total of 168 plates were cut, individual colors chosen for each plate, and prints were pulled on demand. It took the artist two years to complete the series. Larger images of these color linocuts can be viewed at our viewer page.
