"STRUCTURE OF ENERGY 2004" FEATURES ART
BY PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN AND PAINTER
In his solo exhibition "Structure of Energy 2004" at the Music Conservatory of Westchester this month, the accomplished violinist and painter David Tobey explores the relationship between the forms of music and art in a series of fourteen paintings at the Conservatory in the Virginia and Leonard Marx Gallery of the 175-seat Stadther Recital Hall from February 9th through March 19th. The show is the second in a program of art exhibitions that are ongoing at the Conservatory's headquarters at 216 Central Avenue in White Plains, NY. The program was initiated last year to exhibit works by visual artists who teach, study or who otherwise are affiliated with the Conservatory.
The artist's exploration into the relationship between visual forms and music can be attributed in no small part to David Tobey's lifetime experiences. His father is the famous historical painter and muralist Alton Tobey; and his mother Rosalyn was a distinguished concert pianist. His early education, in addition to the training received from both his parents was at The Art Student's League and Juilliard in New York City, both of which are, respectively, very highly regarded institutions of learning for art and music. In his early years he also studied at the Music Conservatory.
Tobey holds a Masters Degree in Art from The College of New Rochelle, and he is co-chairman of The New Rochelle Council on The Arts, in the city where he lives, an organization that is very active in the presentation of both visual arts and musical exhibitions, concerts and other events. Today, in addition to his painting (his works have been in over a dozen exhibitions and he had a one-man show at a New York City gallery last year) he does concert violin work and enjoys a busy career as a violinist and teacher. He performs with many of the New York City freelance orchestras, such as the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and with Broadway shows. He is also a member of the Westchester Philharmonic. David Tobey teaches privately and is currently the Middle School Orchestra director in the New Rochelle School District.
An internet preview tour of the exhibition, with over a dozen paintings in the show, commentary by the artist, his biography and excerpts from review of his work can be seen at:
