Over the course of forty years, Dolice created hundreds of linocuts, pastels and paintings of New York City street scenes, in addition to his monochrome etchings, which he occasionally hand-colored. The dozen images below are only a few samples of the replica prints that have been published of his original works in color.

Dolice was best known for his misty snowscenes of New York City neighborhoods, often seen with solitary figures walking alone, or scenes of rainy days, such as the two below.
Trees in the Rain
from a painting, 1950Auto in the Rain
from a painting, 1950Many of the neighborhoods are difficult to recognize, as the artist used considerable artistic license in most of his paintings, intent being mainly that they convey the feeling of the city and just as important that they be immediately recognizable as streets that existed with great probability only in New York. This license was often used, particularly in his pastels, to exaggerate perspective adn create looming architectures that were almos impossible in reality, but that definitely conveyed the majesty and energy of New York
Canyons

In other cases, buildings are immediately recognizable, such as this commission he did of the headquarters of the Singer Corporation some ten years before this building, that was on lower Broadway in the Financial District, was demolished. NEXT COLOR PAGE
